A new smartphone security module that can unlock your phone using a fingerprint reader without the user having to type a password could have wide appeal to criminals and the general public.
The system, which will be released this month by the US tech giant Samsung, lets the user use their smartphone to unlock their phone without the password or any additional physical actions on the user’s part.
The fingerprint reader is built into the smartphone itself, meaning it doesn’t need to be plugged into any USB port.
The module will be available in Samsung phones starting in October, with its launch expected to take place in early November.
The new module, called the Samsung Secure ID, was developed by the San Jose-based company SecureTech Inc. It was announced earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
SecureTech’s new fingerprint reader uses an open-source framework, which means anyone with a smartphone can contribute their ideas to the system.
The SecureID can be used on any Samsung device running Android 5.1 Lollipop and up, and Samsung has already partnered with two manufacturers to provide it.
It can be installed on any Android device running Lollipop, and can work with any Android version of the operating system.
Samsung said the SecureID will be used in conjunction with the Touch ID sensor on Samsung Galaxy smartphones.
The Touch ID system was introduced in the Galaxy S5 last year.
Samsung has already begun shipping its new fingerprint sensor to select Samsung devices.
But the SecureIDs’ use in the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 smartphones is just the first step toward its wider use in phones and other mobile devices.
It will be possible to unlock a smartphone by adding a “PIN” or “key” to the phone’s settings page, a way to set a PIN for unlocking or changing a password.
This way, a fingerprint sensor can be set on any of the devices to unlock the device without a password or physical interaction.
It also means a user can also change a password without the use of a fingerprint scanner, as well as unlock a device by entering a PIN on the lock screen.
