Google has announced the release of a new fingerprint scanner for its Android phones, which can unlock devices from anywhere in the world.
The company said the system, called the ‘fingerprinting fingerprint’, is designed to help make phones safer by removing the need for a fingerprint reader or a PIN.
Google’s announcement comes just weeks after it unveiled the new fingerprint technology it hopes will make Android phones more secure, and it’s one of the first times the company has revealed the technology.
Google said the new system is available for “most devices”, and that it can unlock the phone by sending a short video message to the device.
The ‘fingerprints’ are designed to let a user access the phone with the touch of a finger and are “designed to work with Google+, Google Search, Google Docs, Google Photos, Google Maps, and other apps that require a fingerprint”, Google said.
This is one of a number of new fingerprint systems Google has launched in recent months.
Earlier this year, the company announced its own ‘Google Now’ feature, which allows a user to ask questions using a voice command, or by taking a photo with a camera and scanning it.
