The US government has been working to secure its biometric data for some time now, and the latest announcement that it is finally doing so is a good sign.
The FBI is working on a new system called the Biosignature Service that will allow people to log into their online accounts using a smartphone’s built-in biometric reader.
“Biosignatures will enable the FBI to identify the individuals who have used a device in a criminal investigation,” a joint press release from the FBI and DHS said.
The bureau will be using the new system to “provide a better security experience for the public, and to protect the integrity of the biometric information.”
The biometric security system will be able to store passwords, unlock devices, and use other biometric identifiers, including iris scans and fingerprints.
